Top Ten Disney Villains

 Top Ten Disney Villains

For today's entry, in honor of it being the month of Halloween, I decided to list my ten favorite Disney villains.  For them to be on my list, they have to be from an animated Disney film (As much as I wanted to put Davy Jones or Lord Cutler Beckett on the list, I decided to make this an animated top ten.) and I must have seen the film.  (So as much as I have heard about him, Frollo will not be appearing on the list, sorry!)

     With that, let's get started!!

 #10 Queen of Hearts
Alice in Wonderland

One of the first Disney films I remember watching, the Queen is remembered as one of the first jerks I remember being introduced to!  Drunk on power, just waiting for an excuse to decapitate someone, she rules with an iron fist without the least bit of patience or mercy for anybody.  Not to mention she's a cheat at croquet!

#9 Shere Khan
The Jungle Book

Shere Khan is the sole reason this story is set in place to begin with.  The mancub Mowgli is in danger himself and endangers the other animals in the jungle when they hear Shere Khan is in the jungle.  He comes across as sophisticated and educated.  Mowgli, however, shows no fear when he meets Khan.  I love that interaction where Khan gives him ten seconds to run.  "You're not making this very fun!"

#8 Maleficent
Sleeping Beauty

I think this is one where people will be questioning my placement.  Usually when I see her on lists, she's usually at least top five.  I really don't have much attachment to Sleeping Beauty.  I can, however, acknowledge her for what she is as an iconic Disney villain.  She tries to curse Aurora to death simply because she didn't get an invite to a party!  Plus, I can admit that her final confrontation with Prince Philip where she transforms into the dragon is one of the coolest fight scenes ever in a Disney film.

#7 Scar
The Lion King

The lion who's jealous of the nephew who robbed him of his path to the throne, he's actually one of my favorite villains in a Disney film.  Be Prepared is one of my all-time favorite Disney films, despite it being a villain's song.  However, Scar does get a big knock on the list because although he's one of the few villains who succeeds (for a time) at pulling off his plan, he becomes a whiny diva after he achieves his goal.  ("It's the lionesses job to do the hunting!")

#6 Prince John
Robin Hood

The interim King while his brother Richard is off on the Crusades, Prince John is about as selfish and cruel as you can find them.  Egotistical and a pansy at the same time, he is fairly entertaining to watch.  He gets quite dark at the end of the film where he's raised taxes so much nearly every citizen is in jail.  This is one of my all-time favorite Disney films

#5 Dr Facilier
Princess and the Frog

Ok, honestly, if I had created this list a year or two ago, Dr Facilier would not have even made this list.  However, as of late I've really grown to love The Princess and the Frog, the story, the characters, the songs and hence, the villain.  A voodoo man out to capture souls for the underworld, he becomes involved in trying to capture Prince Naveen and thus ultimately capture all of New Orleans.  (I don't want to explain it all here.  I just suggest watching it if you don't know the story.)

#4 Jafar
Aladdin

I love Jafar merely because of his demeanor.  Most of the time he's just so cool and calm, all the while plotting his rise to power.  Not to mention he has one of the best accomplices ever.  Iago is one of the funniest sidekicks in any movie ever.  I don't blame Gilbert Gottfried for saying it's his favorite role of all-time.

#3 Ursula
The Little Mermaid

Since The Little Mermaid was my favorite Disney film for quite awhile, it's no surprise the Sea Witch is on this list and so high on it.  I also remember she was the first character I ever saw that was patterned after the person who voiced them.  (Which is now quite common.)  Plus she has one of the most memorable villain songs ever.  (Poor Unfortunate Souls).

#2 Hades
Hercules

The hothead from the underworld is really hard to top.  The top two on my list were REALLY hard to pick between.  Simply unhappy with his given lot in life, he plots to overtake Zeus and rule on high.  His character was written and pulled off so well.  Almost everything is perfectly timed, especially his temper tantrums.  One of the funniest moments ever for me in a Disney film ever is where he flips out on Pain and Panic for supporting Hercules.  James Woods loved Hades so much he insists on being brought on whenever Disney uses Hades.  (ie Kingdom Hearts)

#1 Captain Hook
Peter Pan

Like Dr Facilier, if I'd written this about a year or two earlier, this turnout might have been different.  Unlike Dr Facilier though, I still believe Hook would have made the list, just wouldn't have been here at number one.  I can't really think of anybody who hears "Captain Hook" and doesn't immediately think of this version.  For me Disney created the most memorable version of the character, it's tough to beat.

There we go, my top ten Disney villains!   This post was created fairly quickly.  I didn't plan out what I was going to say about each character either, so that's why it's fairly brief.
